Song of the Dawn

Gana Art is pleased to present Song of The Dawn, a solo exhibition of works by Choi Jongtae who is the master of modern Korean sculpture. Since the 1960s, he has explored the theme of spirituality and the essence of life through his novel forms of sculpture that break the boundary between the abstract and the figurative. Featuring recently produced sculptures, paintings, and drawings, the exhibition aims to shed light on his endless passion for art and his search for the true reality.

Choi used art and the act of creation as his media to discover the truth. In order to visualize the pure essence, he combines the simplicity of traditional Korean art with his practice and expresses the life force and eternal peace through static postures and facial expressions. After spending his entire life searching for the most sublime form of art that captures the true reality, Choi however, mentioned that he could recently get liberated as he learned that there is no answer to art as well as life. Coming out of a long night full of questions, the artist speaks about this splendid light of the dawn through his work in which everything exists in the perfect state of eternity transcending time and space. With Choi’s works that show the utopia he longed to discover, Gana Art hopes that this exhibition will provide audiences with a moment of peace and liberty that will last forever in time.

새벽의 노래

가나아트는 예술을 통해 영원을 탐구하는 한국 현대조각의 거장 최종태(b. 1932)의 개인전 《새벽의 노래》를 개최한다. 1960년대부터 추상과 구상을 넘나드는 독창적인 형태의 조각을 통해 삶의 본질과 영성을 표현해온 그는 현대조각사에서의 위상을 널리 인정받고 있다. 이번 전시는 최근에 제작된 조각과 평면 작품들을 선보임으로써 예술과 진리를 향한 그의 끊이지 않는 열정과 계속해서 이어지고 있는 그의 예술적 행보를 조명하고자 한다.

그는 예술이라는 매체와 창작이라는 끊임없는 수행의 행위를 통해 진리를 발견하고자 했다. 오롯이 순수한 본질만을 표현하기 위해 그는 간결하고 소박한 한국 고유의 아름다움을 결합한 독창적인 예술 양식을 확립하였으며 정적인 자세와 고요히 침묵하는 듯한 표정을 통해 언어화될 수 없는 생명 의식과 영원한 평화를 가시화한다. 진리와 숭고한 아름다움을 담아내는 예술을 향하여 지치지 않는 여정을 지속해온 그는 그러나 최근에서야 예술과 삶에 정답이 없음을 알게 되어 완전한 자유를 얻었다고 한다. 의문으로 가득 찬 어두운 밤을 지나 새벽의 빛을 맞이한 최종태는 찬란한 자유를 자신의 작품에 투영하는데, 모든 속박을 벗어난 그의 예술에는 시대의 구분도, 유(有)와 무(無)의 경계도 없으며 모든 것이 완전한 상태로 영원의 시간 속에 존재한다. 긴 세월 동안 그토록 도달하고자 했던 이상향을 담아내는 그의 작품을 통해, 영원히 소멸하지 않는 평화와 자유의 시간을 선사하기를 기대한다.
