Weep Not

Gana Art Hannam is pleased to present 《Weep Not》, the latest solo exhibition by Eddie Kang (b. 1980), who paints the ‘purity of the heart’ through characters that encapsulate our pasts and evoke a nostalgic sentiment. This will mark his first exhibition in Korea in four years, due to his exuberant activities abroad. After majoring in film, animation, and video at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Eddie has successfully emerged onto the international scene with numerous solo and group exhibitions across Taiwan, China, and Japan, and collaborations with multiple corporates and fashion brands. This exhibit, uniquely encompassing both modern art and pop culture, showcases a variety of his most recent works, ranging from paintings to small props. Eddie Kang’s works have drawn inspirations from his childhood memories and his daily life. His signature character, “Loveless” the white dog, is an artistic reanimation of the stray abused dog that Kang had adopted, and symbolizes love, hope, and audacity. Notions of family and love are important media to the artist, demonstrated by the exhibition’s <DNA> series, reinterpreted works based on his daughter’s drawings. Eddie Kang’s works provide for his audience a sense of tranquility found in the journey back to our childhood innocence.  He wishes his works would provide refuge amidst the unrelenting modern life. Weep Not

과거의 추억을 담은 캐릭터를 통해 순수한 감성을 담아내는 에디강 (Eddie Kang, 1980-) 작가의 개인전, 《Weep Not》가 가나아트 한남에서 열린다. 이번 전시는 에디강의 활발한 해외 활동으로 인하여 4년만에 한국에서 열리는 개인전이고 또한 12월에 중국 션전 Louhu Art Museum에서 단체전이 열린다. 그는 로드아일랜드 디자인스쿨 (RISD)에서 영상, 애니메이션, 비디오를 전공하고, 대만, 중국, 일본 등에서 다수의 개인전과 단체전 그리고 여러 기업과의 아트 콜라보레이션 등 활발하게 활동하고 있는 작가이다. 현대미술과 대중문화를 넘나들며 개성있게 전달하는 이번 개인전에는 회화를 포함한 작은 소품까지 다양한 종류의 신작들이 출품된다. 에디강은 유년시절의 추억과 일상생활에 오는 영감을 바탕으로 작업을 진행해왔다. 그의 캐릭터 흰색 강아지인 ‘러브리스 (Loveless)는 학대 받은 유기견을 작가가 입양했던 경험을 모티브로, 사랑, 희망, 대담함을 상징하고 있다. 가족과 사랑은 그에게 중요한 매개체이고 이번 전시에 딸이 그린 작업을 바탕으로 새롭게 재해석한 <DNA> 시리즈를 선보인다. 에디강의 작품을 보고있으면 마음이 편안해지고 마치 동심의 세계로 돌아간 듯 한 느낌을 준다. 현대인의 바쁜 삶에 자신의 예술로 치유와 행복을 주고싶다는 에디강의 작품을 통해 소중함과 여유로움을 다시 생각해 보는 시간을 갖길 바란다.
