Choi Jongtae · Park Sukwon

Gana Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of two master Korean sculptors – Choi Jongtae and Park Sukwon. As prominent figures of Korean art from the 1960s to the present, they developed a distinctive artistic language not restricted to a specific form when Informel and Dansackhwa were highly prevalent in the Korean art scene. The exhibition featuring Choi and Park’s sculptures and paintings will delve into their artistic world and highlight their aesthetics from a renewed perspective.

Choi Jongtae is known for his sculptures that cross the boundary between figurative and abstract forms. He discovered the ideal of human beauty and perfection in the female figure, reflecting the line from Goethe’s Faust: “The eternal feminine draws us upward” (Das Ewig-Weibliche zieht uns hinan). This became the major motif in his creations, leading him to produce sculptures in the form of girls and women. The simple, unadorned forms in his work represent the classical elegance of the inner spiritual world. Park Sukwon incorporates natural materiality through the expressive use of segmentation and conjugation methods. He embodied the accumulation of natural materials such as stone and wood, and since the early 1990s, he has been working on the Accumulation series, combining the human mind with his accumulation methodology. Additionally, his paintings of the same title utilize Korean paper cut into several geometric shapes to convey themes related to humanity, culture, and history. We hope that this exhibition will provide audiences with a moment to experience the enduring passion of the artists, who have each built their own unique artistic worlds.

가나아트는 한국 현대 조각계의 원로 최종태, 박석원의 2인전을 개최한다. 이들은 1960년대부터 현재까지 활발한 작업을 펼치며 한국 현대미술의 발전에 이바지해왔다. 유럽의 앵포르멜과 한국 단색화의 흐름 속에서 시작된 이들의 작업은 하나의 형식에 매몰되지 않고 독자적인 영역을 구축하며 발전하였다. 본 전시는 한국 조각계에 새로운 지평을 연 두 예술가의 조각과 평면 작업을 함께 조명함으로써 이들의 작업 세계를 다각도로 살펴보고자 한다.

최종태는 추상과 구상의 경계를 넘나드는 독자적인 형태의 조각으로 화단의 주목을 받았다. 그는 ‘여성적인 것이 인류를 구원한다’는 괴테의 <파우스트>에 적힌 한 구절처럼 여성의 형상에서 가장 아름답고 완전한 인간을 발견하였으며, 소녀상과 여인상을 작업의 주된 모티프로 삼았다. 그의 작업에 나타나는 불필요한 장식이 배제된 단순하고 순수한 형태는 고아한 내적 정신세계를 표상한다. 한편 박석원은 분절과 결합의 방식을 사용해 재료 본연의 물성에 집중한 작업을 펼쳐왔다. 다년간의 조각적 실험 끝에 탄생한 그의 <적의> 연작은 돌이나 나무와 같은 자연 그 자체의 물성을 살린 전작 <적> 시리즈에 인간적인 흔적이 덧입혀진 작품이다. 또한 1990년대부터 시작된 동명의 평면 작업은 한지를 기하학적인 형태로 반복적으로 자르고 쌓아 인간, 문화, 역사와 관련된 주제를 담아낸다. 저마다 고유한 방식으로 독자적인 작업 세계를 구축해온 두 작가의 작품을 선보이는 이번 전시가 예술을 향한 끊임없는 이들의 열정을 보여주는 자리가 되기를 기대한다.
