Mindscapes

Gana Art is delighted to present Mindscapes, a group exhibition co-curated by Tsubaki Reiko (b. 1973), curator at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. Featuring over 60 works by six Japanese artists, this exhibition highlights the diversity and breadth of exploration of contemporary Japanese art. Under the theme of ‘Mindscapes,’ the artists visualize objects or spaces that evoke significant emotions in their personal lives. The participating artists—Fujikura Asako (b. 1992), Kaneuji Teppei (b. 1978), Kawashima Hideaki (b. 1969), Kudo Makiko (b. 1978), Tsuchiya Nobuko and Yokoyama Yuichi (b. 1967)—engage with various media, including painting, photography, manga, sculpture, installation, and video, to delve into themes such as self and other, the unconscious and the dream state, as well as the intersection of life and death.

Their mindscapes consist of real or fictional images that reflect cohesive inner worlds, capturing the natural beauty of everyday life with delicate sensitivity and keen observation. Fujikura Asako creates 3D graphic animations of imaginary cities in which the virtual and real overlap, while Kaneuji Teppei explores the relationship between material and image by collaging everyday objects and various images from around the world. Kawashima Hideaki will present new works that explores the cycle of life and death through the passing of those close to him close to him during the pandemic. Kudo Makiko creates paintings that visualize abstract sensations such as everyday observations, dreams, and the unconscious, while Tsuchiya Nobuko presents installations around narratives created from imagination and cosmology to represent the unknown universe and fantastic realities. Choosing manga as a ‘medium that can depict time’, Yokoyama Yuichi redefines the traditional narrative structure of manga, using only certain onomatopoeia and dynamic scenes to express the passage of time instead of dialogue. Gana Art hopes this exhibition, which spotlights the distinctive artistic worlds of these six artists, will awaken our inner psychological and emotional senses, offering an opportunity for reflection on its significance.

가나아트는 도쿄 모리 미술관의 큐레이터 츠바키 레이코(Tsubaki Reiko, b. 1973)와 공동 기획한 그룹전 《Mindscapes》를 통해 일본 현대미술의 다양성과 지형도를 보여주는 여섯 작가의 작품 60여 점을 선보인다. 이번 전시에 참여하는 후지쿠라 아사코 (Fujikura Asako, b. 1992-), 가네우지 텟페이 (Kaneuji Teppei, b. 1978-), 카와시마 히데아키 (Kawashima Hideaki, b. 1969-), 쿠도 마키코 (Kudo Makiko, b. 1978-), 츠치야 노부코 (Tsuchiya Nobuko), 요코야마 유이치 (Yokoyama Yuichi, b. 1967-)는 자아와 타자, 꿈과 무의식, 삶과 죽음 등 다양한 주제에 얽힌 각자의 내면세계를 회화, 사진, 만화, 조각 및 설치, 비디오 등의 매체를 통해 풀어낸다. 이번 전시가 이들의 작품 세계를 통해 동시대 일본 현대미술의 흐름을 살펴볼 수 있는 기회를 제공하며, 동시에 각국의 현대미술 간 교류를 강화하는 뜻깊은 자리가 되기를 기대한다.

본 전시는 ’Mindscapes(심상 풍경)’을 주제로, 개인의 삶에서 특별한 정서를 불러일으키는 대상이나 공간을 시각화한 여섯 명의 일본 작가들을 조명하는 그룹전이다. 이들이 표상하는 심상의 풍경은 응집된 내면세계를 현실 또는 가상의 이미지들로 조합하거나, 섬세한 감성과 관찰력으로 일상의 자연스러운 모습을 담아낸 작품들로 이루어져 있다. 후지쿠라 아사코는 가상과 현실이 중첩된 상상 속 도시의 모습을 3D 그래픽 애니메이션으로 표현하고, 가네우지 텟페이는 일상에서 마주하는 사물들과 세계 각지의 다양한 이미지를 콜라주 하여 물질과 이미지의 관계를 탐구한다. 카와시마 히데아키는 팬데믹 시기에 겪은 가까운 이들의 죽음을 통해 삶과 죽음이라는 생명의 순환에 대해 고찰하는 신작을 선보인다. 쿠도 마키코는 일상 속에서 관찰한 소재, 꿈과 무의식과 같은 추상적 감각을 시각화하는 회화 작업을, 츠치야 노부코는 상상력과 우주물리학을 바탕으로 창조한 서사를 중심으로 설치 작업을 전개하며 미지의 우주 세계와 환상적 실제를 표현한다. “시간을 그릴 수 있는 매체”로서 만화를 선택한 요코야마 유이치는 대화 대신 특정 의성어와 역동적인 장면만으로 시간의 흐름을 표현하며, 만화의 전통적인 서사 구조를 재정의한다. 이들 6인의 다채로운 예술 세계를 조명하는 본 전시가 우리 내면의 심리적, 감정적 감각을 일깨우고 그 의미를 고찰할 기회가 되기를 기대한다.
