New Light

Gana Art is pleased to present New Light, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Aaron Johnson—his third with the gallery. In this latest body of work, Johnson ventures into new territory, exploring two-figure compositions that heighten the dynamic interplay between abstraction and figuration.  Renowned for his fluid paint techniques within a Color Field methodology, Johnson approaches paint as a force of nature, allowing it to flow, collide, and merge organically. This process reinforces the metaphysical and mystical undertones of his work, reflecting his deep engagement with nature-based spirituality and the interconnectedness of all things. Viewers are drawn into a world of nature spirits, ethereal beings, and magical entities, conjured through vibrant color fields and abstract forms. A sense of mystery permeates the paintings, with luminous hues and pulsating layers of paint creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere. His signature technique of pouring circular forms generates enigmatic, glowing orbs—evoking planets, chakras, or celestial bodies.

With this series, Johnson delves into the profound connection between two figures, prompting existential and spiritual inquiries: What does it mean to share a life with someone? What does it mean to merge souls? This body of work also marks a significant personal shift for the artist. After 25 years in New York City, Johnson relocated to Los Angeles, where he discovered a renewed relationship with light, space, and the natural world. His new studio—nestled in a lush garden surrounded by palms and cacti—has deepened his connection to his surroundings, a transformation that is palpably reflected in these paintings.

Moreover, many of the works in this exhibition were created during a pivotal time in his life: while awaiting the birth of his first child and in the first months of fatherhood. The wonder of new life is woven into the fabric of these paintings, enriching them with a profound sense of transformation and renewal. Through New Light, Johnson invites us to encounter animistic spirits alive in trees, rivers, and stars, evoking a deep reverence for both the earth and the cosmos. This exhibition is a meditation on interconnectedness—a celebration of light, life, and the unseen forces that bind us all.

가나아트는 로스앤젤레스를 기반으로 활동하는 작가 애런 존슨(Aaron Johnson, b.1975)의 개인전 《New Light》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 가나아트에서 열리는 그의 세 번째 개인전으로, 두 인물이 함께 등장하는 구성을 탐구한 신작을 선보인다. 그의 작업은 자연에 기반한 영성과 만물의 연결성에 대한 명상적 탐구를 중심으로 전개되며, 관객은 작품 속에서 신비로운 존재들과 마법 같은 생명체들을 마주하게 된다. 특히 그의 작품에서 색채는 단순한 시각적 요소를 넘어, 화면에 역동적인 에너지를 불어넣고 영적인 깊이를 더하는 중요한 역할을 한다. 또한 둥글게 퍼지는 원형의 색채들은 행성이나 차크라(Chakra)를 연상시키며, 모든 존재가 거대한 에너지의 흐름 속에서 연결되어 있음을 암시한다.

최근 존슨은 두 명 이상의 인물이 등장하는 구도를 통해, 개인주의가 팽배한 현대 사회에서 “누군가와 삶을 공유한다는 것은 무엇을 의미하는가?”라는 철학적 질문을 던진다. 이를 통해 인간의 관계성과 영적인 동반자에 대한 탐구를 이어가고 있으며, 이번 전시에서는 ‘연인’이라는 모티프가 특히 중요한 요소로 부각된다. 이러한 변화는 작가 개인의 삶의 변화와 맞닿아 있다. 25년간 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하던 그는 로스앤젤레스로 거처를 옮긴 후, 새로운 빛과 공간을 경험하며 작품 속에 이전과는 다른 감각을 반영하기 시작했다. 그의 새로운 작업실은 야자수와 선인장이 가득한 정원 한가운데 자리하고 있으며, 자연 속에서의 몰입은 그의 회화에 더욱 풍부한 시각적 요소를 불어넣었다. 환경의 변화는 그에게 색채와 구성을 탐구할 새로운 영감을 제공했으며, 자연과의 연결성이 한층 강화된 작품 세계를 만들어냈다.

특히 이번 신작 시리즈는 첫 아이의 탄생을 기다리던 시기와 부모가 된 첫 몇 달 동안 작업한 결과물로, 생명의 탄생이라는 경이로운 경험이 화면 곳곳에 스며 있다. 이는 그의 회화 속 인물들이 서로 교감하고 융합되는 모습과도 맞닿아 있으며, 삶과 관계, 그리고 존재의 의미를 더욱 깊이 탐색하는 계기가 되었다. 이번 전시는 나무, 강, 별들 속에 깃든 생명과 에너지를 포착하며, 모든 것이 끊임없이 변화하고 흐른다는 개념을 다시금 환기시켜 깊은 성찰의 순간을 선사할 것이다.
