김병기와 상파울루 비엔날레
Kim Byungki and Bienal De São Paulo

Gana Art and Gana Foundation for Arts and Culture presents its first exhibition of 2025, “Kim Byungki and Bienal De São Paulo,” honoring the 3rd anniversary of Kim Byungki’s passing and the 60th anniversary of the 8th São Paulo Biennale, where he served as commissioner and jury member. Through Kim’s life, works, and contributions to the 8th Bienal De São Paulo, this exhibition reassesses his legacy as a key figure in Korean modern art and bridges dispersed narratives in its history. 

Divided into two themes, “Kim Byungki’s Artistic World” and “The 8th São Paulo Biennale,” the exhibition presents 10 of Kim’s major works from his Saratoga period to later years, highlighting his lifelong exploration of the boundaries between figuration, abstraction, and non-representation. It also revisits the 8th Bienal De São Paulo, featuring 40 works from the 1960s and later years by participating artists, including Lee Ungno, Kim Whanki, Kim Chongyung, Lee Seduk, Kwon Okyon, Chung Chang-Sup, Kim Tschang-yeul, and Park Seobo. More than a retrospective, this exhibition records how Korean modern art responded to and evolved within the 1960s global art scene. 

가나아트와 가나문화재단은 2025년 첫 기획전으로 《김병기와 상파울루 비엔날레》를 개최합니다. 이번 전시는 2022년 작고한 태경 김병기(台徑 金秉騏, 1916-2022)의 3주기를 기념하는 동시에, 김병기가 커미셔너이자 심사위원으로 활동했던 1965년 제8회 상파울루 비엔날레의 개최 60주년을 기념하는 자리입니다. 가나아트와 가나문화재단은 김병기의 일대기와 작품, 그리고 제8회 상파울루 비엔날레라는 사건을 통해 한국 현대미술의 거목 김병기의 위상에 대해 재고하고, 한국 근현대 미술사의 분산된 사실들을 연결하는 계기로 삼고자 합니다.

전시는 ‘김병기의 예술세계’와 ‘제 8회 상파울루 비엔날레’ 두 가지 주제로 구성됩니다. 먼저 김병기의 사라토가 시절부터 말년에 이르는 주요작품 10여점을 선보이고, 그가 평생에 걸쳐 탐구한 형상과 비형상, 추상미술의 경계를 향한 예술적 여정을 집중적으로 조망합니다. 또한 제8회 상파울루 비엔날레를 재조명하기 위해 참여작가인 이응노, 김환기, 김종영, 이세득, 권옥연, 정창섭, 김창열, 박서보의 1960년대와 후반기 작품 40여 점을 소개합니다. 이번 전시는 단순한 회고를 넘어, 1960년대 한국 현대미술이 국제적인 미술의 흐름 속에서 어떤 방식으로 대응하고 변모해 나갔는지를 보여주는 중요한 역사적 기록이 될 것입니다.
