Born in Jerusalem, David Gerstein (b. 1944) is known as a Pop artist representing Israel. After completing his studies at world-renowned organizations such as the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, he continued his studies at Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, the Arts Students League in New York, and the St. Martin's School of Art in London, continuously building up his original work methodology. Based on a computer digitalization blueprint of his drawings on paper, Gerstein carefully cuts out steel or aluminum using a laser. After such crafting, he colors the plates with a brush or silkscreen print, which gives the work the ambivalent characteristics of three-dimensional sculpture and two-dimensional painting. This unique cut-out method, achieved through a complex process, has become the work method that symbolizes Gerstein. This artist’s works have come to be positioned in the middle zone between painting and sculpture, thus enabling him to overcome the limitations of traditional media in both methods of expression and selection of theme. While bringing out the painterly materiality through brilliant hues and bold brushstrokes, he also reveals a sense of space by stacking the cut-out layers. He blows life into various dynamic subjects, such as people busily moving about in the city, moving bicycles and cars, and surfers, by introducing diverse colors. Such Pop artworks painted in colors unique to Gerstein have continued to comfort people.

예루살렘 출신인 데이비드 걸스타인(David Gerstein, b. 1944)은 이스라엘을 대표하는 세계적인 팝아티스트이다. 그는 예루살렘 브자렐 예술 대학(Bezalel Academy, Jerusalem)을 마친 뒤, 파리 에콜 데 보자르(Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts, Paris), 뉴욕 아트 스튜던트 리그(Arts Students League, New York), 런던 세인트 마틴 예술 학교(St. Martin's School of Art, London) 등 세계 유수 교육기관을 거치며 독창적 작업방식을 구축해 나갔다. 종이에 그린 드로잉을 컴퓨터로 디지털화하여 설계한 뒤, 이를 바탕으로 강철이나 알루미늄 등을 레이저로 세밀하게 잘라낸다. 세공 이후 가공판에 붓칠하거나 실크스크린으로 채색함으로써 작품은 조각의 입체성과 회화의 평면성이라는 양면적 특성을 모두 획득한다. 이렇듯 여러 과정을 거치는 독특한 컷아웃(cut-out) 방식은 걸스타인을 상징하는 작업방식이 되었다. 결과적으로 그의 작품은 회화와 조각의 중간 지대에 위치하게 되었고, 이로써 작가는 표현 방식과 주제 선택에 있어 전통적 매체의 한계를 극복하였다. 화사한 색채와 과감한 붓터치로 회화적 물성을 가져오면서도 컷아웃된 판을 적층하여 조각적 공간감도 드러낸 것이다. 또한 도시에서 분주히 움직이는 사람들, 달리는 자전거와 자동차, 서핑하는 인물 등 걸스타인은 역동적 대상에 다양한 색감을 도입하여 생동감을 불어넣었다. 걸스타인만의 색깔이 묻어나는 팝아트 작품은 특유의 유쾌함으로 지친 현대인을 위로하고 있다.
