HERE COMES THE TWISTER

Gana Art is pleased to present ‘HERE COMES THE TWISTER,’ a solo exhibition by Manhattan-based artist Adam Himebauch (b. 1983). Since relocating to New York’s Lower East Side (LES) from Wisconsin, USA in 2011, Himebauch has showcased his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions at prominent venues such as Ceysson & Bénétièr (New York, Koerich, Paris, Lyon, Geneva, Saint-Etienne), Albertz Benda (New York, Los Angeles), and David Zwirner (New York, Los Angeles, London, Hong Kong, Paris). His work has also been highlighted in feature articles in The New York Times (2023) and Rolling Stone Magazine (2015), and through artistic collaborations with Comme des Garçons and Nike. This exhibition marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in Asia and will feature recent paintings that illustrate his Internal landscape, drawing inspiration from his childhood memories.

Himebauch was raised in Tornado Alley, a region in the Central United States named after its frequent tornado warnings and imminent threats. Childhood recollections of seeking refuge in the basement during storms instilled in the artist a profound sense of safety-related trauma. Central to his artistic expression are elements reflecting this trauma, notably the recurring motif of vertical lines resembling window frames and the depiction of turbulent townscapes buffeted by the wind. The reddish hue of the sky and the imagery of fluttering leaves serve to suggest the impending arrival of a tornado, intensifying the ominous ambiance. His use of large-scale canvases, exceeding two meters in length and mirroring the dimensions of actual window frames, envelops the observer, inviting them to peer out as if witnessing the approach of a tornado firsthand. “Making these paintings as well as working within the theme of the exhibition, is a way of digesting the trauma induced by the chaotic and relative situations,” as the artist stated, he views his creative process not merely as an act of artistic production but as a form of treating, transcending the boundaries of conventional artistry.

HERE COMES THE TWISTER

가나아트는 뉴욕 맨해튼을 기반으로 활동하는 아담 하임박(Adam Himebauch, b. 1983)의 개인전《HERE COMES THE TWISTER》를 개최한다. 2011년 미국 위스콘신에서 뉴욕 로어 이스트 사이드(LES, Lower East Side)로 이주한 하임박은 쎄송&베네티에(Ceysson & Bénétièr, 뉴욕, 코에리히, 파리, 리옹, 제네바, 생테티엔), 알버츠 벤다(Albertz Benda, 뉴욕, 로스앤젤레스), 데이비드 즈위너(David Zwirner, 뉴욕, 로스앤젤레스, 런던, 홍콩, 파리)와 같은 다수의 기관에서 개인전 및 단체전을 통해 작품을 선보여 왔다. 이 외에도 그의 작품과 행보는 2023년 뉴욕타임스(The New York Times)와 2015년 롤링 스톤(Rolling Stone Magazine)에서 특집 기사로 다뤄졌으며, 꼼 데 가르송(Comme des Gar ons) 및 나이키(Nike)와 예술 협업을 통해서도 소개된 바 있다. 본 전시는 아시아에서 최초로 선보이는 하임박의 개인전으로, 작가의 유년 시절 기억에서 비롯된 내면의 세계를 그려낸 신작을 조명하는 자리가 될 것이다.

하임박은 ‘토네이도의 골목(Tornado Alley)’이라 불리는 미국 중부 지역에서 어린 시절을 보냈다. 잦은 토네이도 경보와 위협, 그리고 폭풍이 불기 시작하면 지하실로 피신하곤 했던 어린 날의 기억은 작가에게 안전에 대한 트라우마를 남겼다. 그의 트라우마를 담은 작품에서 가장 눈에 띄는 부분은 단연 창틀처럼 보이는 수직선들과, 휘몰아치는 바람 속 혼란스러운 마을의 풍경이다. 붉은빛 하늘, 휘날리는 나뭇잎들은 토네이도가 들이닥치고 있음을 암시하며, 불길한 분위기를 고조시킨다. 실제 창틀과 비슷한 크기인 2미터가 넘는 대형 캔버스는 관람자로 하여금 창밖으로 다가오는 토네이도를 보고 있는 것과 같은 화면으로 몰입도를 높인다. 본 전시의 출품작들은 토네이도가 지나간 진행 상황을 시간순으로 보여주며, 마지막 순서에는 모든 재난이 끝나고 평화를 되찾은 풍경을 기록했다. “이 주제에 맞춰 작업하는 것은 내가 자라면서 겪었던 혼란스러운 상황들과 그 트라우마를 소화하는 방식입니다.”라는 작가의 말처럼, 그의 작업은 예술을 창조해 내는 창작 활동을 넘어선 자기 치유의 과정이다.
