JETSET

Gana Art is delighted to present JETSET, the first solo exhibition in Korea by Scottish painter Alexander Guy (b. 1962). Guy creates works he refers to as the “tacky realism” of modern life, driven by a genuine interest in connecting with real people and places. The title of this exhibition, JETSET, refers to wealthy individuals or famous celebrities who travel the world and enjoy a luxurious lifestyle. Guy focused on the rise of a new “JETSET” in the age of social media, where people showcase their curated lives and transform into virtual celebrities online. Through this exhibition, he addresses the anxieties and tensions of modern society, particularly in the rapidly changing society of consumerism following the pandemic lockdown, using everyday objects such as meat on barbeque grill, coffee vending machines, and McDonald’s kiosks.

With glossy surfaces, vibrant colors, thick impasto, and detailed depictions in saturated, artificial hues, Guy’s works act as time capsules, capturing the social phenomena, popular culture, and trends of his era. He fills large canvases with meticulously selected objects, using his distinct style to create a dramatic effect, much like a spotlight on a stage. This approach transforms everyday objects into art, offering new perspectives. Guy’s work functions as a visual journal, elevating the ordinary to monumental status and glamourizing the mundane, almost as if it were celebrity culture. By assigning new aesthetic value to familiar objects, he humorously uncovers contemporary issues often overlooked in the routines of daily life, prompting us to stay mindful of the world we inhabit.

JETSET

가나아트는 스코틀랜드 글래스고에서 활동하고 있는 작가 알렉산더 가이(b.1962)의 국내 첫 번째 개인전 “JETSET”을 개최한다. 가이는 일상 속 사람, 장소, 물건에 관심을 두고, 그가 스스로 ‘태키 리얼리즘(tacky realism)’이라고 명명한 작업을 통해 현대 사회에 만연한 문제에 대한 개인적인 통찰을 공유한다. 본 전시의 제목인 “JETSET”은 세계를 여행하며 삶을 즐기는 부유한 상류층이나 유명 인사를 의미한다. 가이는 SNS 시대에 사람들이 꾸며진 일상을 전시하며 인터넷상에서 가상의 유명인으로 변모해 가는 새로운 ‘JETSET’의 등장에 주목했다. 팬데믹 이후 변화한 소비주의, 급등한 물가, 과도한 포장재 사용 등 현대 사회의 불안과 긴장감을 그릴 위의 고기, 커피 자판기, 맥도날드 키오스크 등 작가가 지난 한 해를 살아가는 동안 마주친 일상적 요소를 상징적 매개체로 삼아 작품에 담아냈다.

매끄러운 표면과 강렬한 색채, 두텁게 발린 물감과 평면적이지만 디테일한 묘사, 강렬한 인공적인 색채가 돋보이는 가이의 작품은 작가가 살아가는 시대의 사회적 현상과 대중문화, 트렌드를 날것 그대로 작품에 담긴 일종의 타임캡슐 역할을 한다. 작가는 대형 캔버스에 단색의 배경 위로 빈틈없이 오브제를 배치하고 그려 내는 과정을 통해 마치 무대 위의 주인공에게 조명을 비추듯 극적인 효과를 주어 주목하게 한다. 이러한 구성을 통해 평범한 대상에 기존의 가치를 뛰어넘는 예술품으로서 새로운 가치를 부여함으로써 그 본질에 대해 사유하게 한다. 또한 작가는 일상속에서 발견되는 사물의 이면에 숨겨진 현대적 문제들을 그만의 화풍으로 유머러스하게 접근하며, 우리에게 주변에 대한 관심을 놓지 말아야 한다는 메시지를 전하고 있다.
