Beyond the Wall

Gana Art is pleased to announce Beyond the Wall, a solo exhibition by Suanjaya Kencut (b. 1994), based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Kencut’s artistic development is deeply influenced by his exposure to historical, cultural, and religious elements during his upbringing in Bali. The artist continues to push boundaries by exploring various materials beyond painting, including sculpture and installation. Kencut pursued a major in Fine Arts at the Indonesia Institute of Art, Yogyakarta. He has held solo exhibitions in prominent cities such as Los Angeles, Seoul, Jakarta, Semarang, and Bali. In this exhibition, Kencut presents a new series of works titled Beyond the Wall, a memoir spanning his youth and adulthood, framed by the sturdy walls of Natah, a Balinese village.

Kencut has created his unique artistic realm with stuffed doll characters and large button eyes. His creation of these doll characters was inspired by the mask of the mythical creature Barong from Balinese mythology, which appears in traditional Balinese performances. The vibrant colors and various patterns that comprise them are inspired by fabrics with traditional patterns that decorate temples in his hometown of Bali. He chose buttons to represent the eyes of the dolls, believing they are the windows to the soul and hoping for a connection between the artist and the viewer, just as buttons connect different fabrics. Against boldly colored, single-hued backgrounds, the dolls come to life on the canvas, showing their individuality through varying sizes, colors, and actions. Childhood memories and the innocence of children are the primary sources of his work, and through his dolls, he conveys a message of hope and a positive attitude toward life. In this exhibition, he captures his experiences and memories with the motif of the village wall as a constant presence in his childhood. For Kencut, the wall is not merely a physical boundary but a symbol of solidarity and a testament to his personal history, intricately intertwined with emotions such as camaraderie, friendship, loneliness, and love. This exhibition, with his new series of works, not only focuses on Kencut’s life journey but also underscores the importance of profound relationships between people, the environment, and the community, offering an opportunity to reflect on the true nature of life beyond solid walls.

Beyond the Wall

가나아트는 인도네시아 욕야카르타를 기반으로 활동하는 수안자야 캔컷(Suanjaya Kencut, b.1994)의 개인전 《Beyond the Wall》을 개최한다. 작가는 인도네시아 발리에서 유년시절을 보내며 경험한 역사적, 문화적, 종교적 자원을 기반으로 창작한 봉제 인형 캐릭터를 통해 회화부터 조각까지 다양한 매체를 이용한 작업을 선보이고 있다. 욕야카르타 예술학교에서 순수 미술을 수학한 작가는 최근 뉴욕의 GR 갤러리(GR Gallery), 로스앤젤레스 로린 갤러리(Lorin Gallery), 자카르타의 루시 아트 스페이스(Ruci Art Space) 등 갤러리에서 개인전을 가졌다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 유년 시절부터 청년기까지, 그가 나고 자란 발리 전통 마을의 나타(Natah)를 둘러싼 벽에 얽힌 그의 개인적인 기억과 경험을 담은 일종의 회고록인 〈Beyond the Wall〉 연작을 선보인다.

캔컷은 단추로 만들어진 커다란 눈을 가진 봉제 인형 캐릭터로 자신만의 작품 세계를 구축하고 있다. 그의 작품에 등장하는 봉제 인형은 발리의 전통 공연에 등장하는 바롱(Barong)의 대형 인형탈에서 영감을 받아 그리기 시작한 것이다. 또한, 인형을 구성하는 다채롭고 강렬한 색상과 패턴은 작가의 고향인 발리의 사원에 장식된 전통 문양이 그려진 천에서 비롯되었다. 작가는 영혼의 창(window to the soul)이라고 믿는 인형의 눈을 표현하는 소재로 단추를 선택했는데 이는 단추가 다른 천 사이를 연결해 주듯 작가 자신과 관람객을 연결해 주는 매개체가 되길 바라는 그의 소망이 담겨있다. 강렬한 색채의 단색 배경 위로 읽을 수 없는 표정의 인형들이 제각기 다른 색상, 무늬, 길이 등으로 저마다 개성을 뽐내며 화면 위에 생동한다. 작가에게 있어 순수하던 어린 시절의 기억은 작품의 주재료가 되어 인형들을 통해 긍정적으로 삶을 살아가는 태도에 대한 희망의 메시지를 전한다. 이번 전시에서는 작가의 성장기에 항상 존재했던 마을의 벽을 모티프로 작가의 경험과 기억을 화면 위에 담아냈다. 작품에 보이듯 벽은 작가에게 단순한 물리적 경계가 아닌 끈끈한 유대감의 상징이자 동료애, 우정, 고독, 사랑 등 다양한 감정의 이야기가 복잡하게 뒤얽혀 있는 개인적 역사의 증거로 존재한다. 이에 본 전시가 작가의 인생의 여정을 조명하는 것을 넘어 인간과 환경, 지역사회와의 깊은 관계의 소중함을 강조하고 견고한 벽 너머 진정한 삶의 본질에 대한 성찰의 기회를 제공하기를 바란다.
