Crossroad

Gana Art is pleased to announce Crossroad, the solo exhibition of Eddie Kang. This solo exhibition, Kang’s first in Los Angeles, showcases works on paper, paintings, and one bronze sculpture that follow a narrative thread around grief and hope, inspired by the passing of the artist’s sister-in-law in 2019 and his desire to comfort his young niece. This is told through the form of the yeti, a character Kang has explored in his work since 2014 and refined for the pieces in this exhibition. In Kang’s narrative, the yeti represents a benevolent spirit that watches over the girl, offering protection and guidance just beyond the visible realm. The theme of Crossroad is multi-layered. To the artist, the experience of making the work around a narrative and as an act of emotional healing represented a shift in his creative process. He also sees an evolution in the style of the work itself. “Crossroad” also refers to a turning point in the artist’s “getting comfortable sharing my stories in more genuine, unfiltered ways,” he says. And with this show, Kang is at a crossroad career-wise, expanding his audience and reach from east to west

가나아트는 에디강의 개인전 《Crossroad》를 개최한다. 작가는 2019년에 겪은 친척의 죽음과, 이를 극복해낸 경험을 바탕으로 당시에 느낀 복합적인 감정을 종이, 캔버스, 브론즈 등 다양한 매체를 통해 서사적으로 풀어냈다. 본 전시는 2014년부터 작가가 탐구해온 캐릭터인 예티를 중심으로 전개된다. 예티는 소녀를 지켜보는 자비로운 영혼이자, 가시적인 영역 너머에서 소녀를 보호하고 인도하는 존재로 그려지며 본 전시의 서사적 흐름을 이끌어 나간다. 전시명인 《Crossroad》는 다양한 함의를 지니고 있다. 작품의 특성인 감정을 치유하는 행위와 내러티브는 작가에게 일상과 작업을 교차하는 창작 과정의 변화를 가져왔다. 동시에 그의 인터뷰에 따르면, ‘내 이야기를 진솔하고 여과되지 않은 방식으로 편안하게 공유하게 된 전환점’을 의미하기도 한다. 마지막으로 본 전시를 통해 작가는 동양에서 서양으로 무대를 확장하고, 새로운 관객들을 만나는 경력의 교차 지점에 있다.
