Le Mal Du Pays: Homesickness

Gana Art is pleased to announce Le Mal du Pays: Homesickness, the solo exhibition of Hiejin Yoo (b. 1987). Yoo creates artworks based on everyday events documented in her diary, fragments of memories, and emotions deeply etched in her consciousness, translating them into oil paintings on canvas. Yoo was born in Münster, Germany, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. She obtained her MFA in Painting from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Yoo has presented her works in diverse galleries, including Half Gallery in New York, Almine Rech Gallery in Brussels, Spurs Gallery in Beijing, Kunstraum Potsdam in Berlin, and Blum and Poe in Los Angeles. Furthermore, her works are included in public and private collections, such as the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA, Pérez Collection in Miami, FL, Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Miami, FL, The FLAG Art Foundation in New York, NY, Marquez Art Projects in Miami, FL, and Xiao Museum in Rizhao, China. In her first solo exhibition in Korea, Yoo introduces a new series of paintings exploring the theme of home and homesickness, reflecting her personal history.

Yoo’s paintings feature silhouettes of body parts in bold white lines against landscapes with vibrant colors inspired by the natural environment and bright sunlight in California. Engaged in introspective contemplation, she draws upon inner memories, bringing them onto canvas as she constructs her imagery. Yoo’s creations are inspired by a compilation of memories from everyday moments and emotions, sometimes portrayed with large abstract planes of color, thus developing a unique visual language. The body silhouettes, that repeats in her series, imbue the work with a sense of dynamic spatiality as they are arranged in both foreground and background. Initially evoking longing and reminiscing on joyful memories and emotions experienced in a long-distance relationship, they have now evolved into a representation of the artist herself, her exploration of identity, and her interaction with nature. Moreover, these silhouettes serve as conduits for various narratives, inviting the audience into realms of imagination. Through her work, Yoo explores the capacity of painting to stimulate viewers’ imagination and empathy, transcending personal experiences and memories. The exhibition, showcasing Hiejin Yoo’s new series of paintings, delves into the theme of homesickness within her unique visual language, promising profound insight into her inner world and artistic journey.

가나아트는 일기에 기록된 일상의 순간들과 기억, 감정에서 영감을 받아 이미지를 재구성하는 작업을 이어온 유희진(b. 1987)의 개인전, 《Le Mal Du Pays: Homesickness》를 개최한다.  독일에서 태어나 캘리포니아 로스앤젤레스를 기반으로 활동하는 작가는 시카고 아트 인스티튜트(School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 시카고)에서 학사, 캘리포니아 대학교(UCLA, 로스앤젤레스)에서 회화 석사 학위를 취득했다. 그는 지난 몇 년간 하프 갤러리(Half Gallery, 뉴욕), 알민 레흐 갤러리(Almine Rech Gallery, 브뤼셀), 스퍼스 갤러리(Spurs Gallery, 베이징), 쿤스트라움 포츠담(Kunstraum Potsdam, 베를린), 블룸 앤 포(Blum and Poe, 로스앤젤러스)와 같은 다양한 갤러리에서 전시를 가졌다. 뿐만 아니라 그의 작품은 조지아주 애틀랜타 하이 미술관(High Museum of Art, Atlanta), 플로리다주의 마이애미 페레즈 컬렉션(Pérez Collection), 마이애미 현대미술관(ICA), 마이애미 마르케즈 아트 프로젝트(Marqués Art Projects), 뉴욕 플래그 아트 재단(The Flag Art Foundation), 중국 리자오 샤오 박물관(Xiao Museum) 등에 소장되어 있다. 작가는 이번 한국에서 갖는 첫 번째 개인전을 통해 집과 향수(鄕愁)에 대한 개인적 이야기를 담은 9점의 신작 회화를 선보인다.

유희진은 미국 서부에서 관찰한 자연환경과 햇빛에서 영향을 받은 따뜻하고 선명한 색감으로 그려낸 일상 속 풍경 위에 굵은 흰 선으로 신체의 일부를 그리는 작업을 이어가고 있다. 작가는 작업하는 과정에서 자기 성찰적인 사유의 시간을 보내며 내면의 기억을 떠올리고 화면을 구상하는 데 많은 시간을 할애한다. 이를 통해 작가는 스쳐 지나간 일상과 감정의 편린에서 비롯된 심상 풍경을 그리고 그 위에 등장하는 다양한 형상들을 단순화시키며 그만의 독자적인 조형 언어를 발전시켰다. 또한 그의 작품에는 흰 선으로 실루엣을 그린 신체 일부분이 반복적으로 등장하는데 이들은 종종 전경과 배경을 넘나들며 작품에 역동적인 공간감을 연출한다. 이는 작가가 현재 함께 사는 연인과 서로 떨어져 지냈던 시기에 느낀 그리움과, 사소하지만 행복한 추억과 감정을 되새기며 그림에 그려 놓은 것으로, 작업을 발전시키는 과정에서 그가 정체성을 탐구하고 자연과 소통하는 방식을 보여주었다. 그의 작품에 등장하는 신체는 작가 자신이기도 하고, 더 나아가 불특정 다수의 누군가가 되어 작품에 다양한 내러티브를 부여하며 관객을 상상의 나래로 이끈다. 이처럼 유희진은 개인적인 경험과 기억의 공유를 넘어 관객의 상상력을 자극하고 공감을 불러일으키는 매개체로서 회화의 가능성을 탐구해왔다. 저마다의 기억을 상기시키는 유희진 작가의 신작을 공개하는 이번 전시가 그의 내면세계와 예술적 여정을 엿볼 수 있는 자리가 되기를 기대한다.
