CASTAWAY

Gana Art is delighted to present CASTAWAY, a solo exhibition by the Brooklyn-based artist Hojae Kim (b. 1993). His oeuvre is characterised by an original synthesis of diverse visual elements, integrating references from literature, film, philosophy, and art history with personal experiences. CASTAWAY marks Kim’s first solo exhibition in Korea, featuring 13 new works inspired by the film of the same name.

The film CAST AWAY (2000), which serves as the narrative backbone of this series, chronicles the four-year journey of Chuck Noland, a FedEx employee stranded on a deserted island following a plane crash. Wilson, the other main character and a volleyball who accompanies the protagonist throughout his time on the island until the moment of escape, serves as a mirror to his soul, symbolising both friendship and a reflection of his inner self. Kim draws a parallel between the deserted island in the film and his own studio, with Noland representing the artist himself, while Wilson reflects the embodiment of his artwork. Upon observing the film, in which the protagonist remains isolated and must build a raft to seek rescue, the artist recognised a parallel to his own isolation in the studio.

Just as Wilson provided Noland with a mental sanctuary—a confidant for his fears, despair, and hope—Kim’s work became his own means of escape from the island of isolation and a conduit for his narrative. The desolate island setting that Kim aims to recreate represents not merely a time of alienation but a mental space born from the aspiration to craft a better future. Viewing his work as an “extension of the self,” Kim envisions the canvas as a vessel bearing the weight of his life’s stories, through which he invites others to glimpse the world as he sees it.

가나아트는 뉴욕 브루클린을 기반으로 활동하는 김호재(Ho Jae Kim, b. 1993-)의 개인전, 《CASTAWAY》를 개최한다. 김호재는 문학, 영화, 철학, 미술사 등에서 차용한 다양한 시각 요소를 개인의 경험과 병치하는 독창적인 작업을 지속하고 있다. 본 전시는 국내에서 최초로 선보이는 작가의 개인전으로, 전시명과 동명의 영화 ‘캐스트 어웨이(CAST AWAY, 2000)’에서 영감을 얻어 그려낸 작가의 신작 13점을 조명하는 자리가 될 것이다.

영화 ‘캐스트 어웨이(CAST AWAY, 2000)’는 페덱스 직원 척 놀랜드가 운송 중 비행기 추락 사고로 인해 무인도에 표류하는 4년간의 시간을 그려낸 영화이다. 이 영화에서 주인공과 탈출 직전까지 섬 생활을 함께 하는 주요 등장인물이자 배구공인 ‘윌슨’은 주인공의 유일한 친구이면서, 동시에 주인공이 자기 자신을 대입하는 존재이다. 호재는 영화에 나온 무인도를 작업실에, 조난자를 ‘자신’에 빗대며, 작품 속 ‘윌슨’의 도상은 창작자인 작가 본인의 초상이자 그가 창조해낸 작품의 투영체로 여긴다.

뗏목이라도 만들어 바다로 나가지 않으면 아무도 주인공을 구하러 오지 않을 것만 같은 영화 속 상황을 보며 김호재는 작업실에 고립된 스스로의 모습을 발견했다. 또한 영화 속 윌슨이 척의 외로움을 달래 주고, 그의 성취, 절망, 희망을 나눌 수 있는 정신적 피난처가 되었듯, 호재에게 있어서 그의 창작물인 작품은 고립된 섬에서 구조되기 위한 수단이자 자신의 이야기를 풀어놓는 창구가 되었다. 따라서 작가가 재현하고자 한 무인도의 풍경은 단순히 소외된 시간이 아닌, 더 나은 미래를 만들고자 하는 간절함에서 비롯된 정신적 공간인 것이다. 작품을 “자아의 확장”이라 여기는 작가는 캔버스를 일생의 이야기를 담는 그릇으로 인식하며, 이를 통해 관객으로 하여금 그의 세계를 들여다볼 수 있는 장을 마련하고자 했다.
