I told you so

Gana Art is pleased to present I told you so, the first solo exhibition in Korea by German artist Jan Köchermann (b. 1967-) who explores new possibilities in public installation. He had exhibitions at the Staatliches Museum für Kunst und Design (Nuremberg, Germany), the Bundeskunsthalle (Bonn, Germany), and the Nasjonalmuseet (Oslo, Norway), among other institutions. Also, his works are included in the German Government Collection of Contemporary Art and the Hamburger Kunsthalle (Hamburg, Germany). This exhibition features Köchermann’s light sculptures and model-like miniatures with film projections. Following a group exhibition at Seoul Women’s University Museum in 2016, it will be the first time he will present his innovative works in Korea.

The artist has been experimenting with diverse projects to make the abyss(Abgründe) physically tangible and stage the visitors to confront the abyss as the boundary. He stages rifts reality and spaces, engaging the viewers to listen and closely investigate the private stories of each tunnel-like box with movements of videos. The miniature boxes combined with video and sound recreate personal spaces or unexpectedly fictitious stages such as a winter view with a snowstorm outside the window or a beautiful natural landscape. These different spaces in Köchermann’s works cross boundaries between inside and outside, science and fiction, dystopia and utopia. They become stages that set each of the narratives, inviting the viewers to be part of the works using their imagination.

I told you so

가나아트는 독일 함부르크와 베를린에서 활동하며 공공설치 작업의 새로운 가능성을 모색하는 작가, 얀 쾨혀만(Jan Köchermann, b. 1967-)의 국내 첫 번째 개인전 《I told you so》를 개최한다.그의 작품은 뉘른베르크 신 미술관(Staatliches Museum für Kunst und Design, 뉘른베르크, 독일), 연방미술관(Bundeskunsthalle, 본, 독일), 노르웨이 국립박물관(Nasjonalmuseet, 오슬로, 노르웨이) 등 다수의 기관에서 소개되었으며, 독일 정부 현대미술 컬렉션 및 함부르크 미술관(Hamburger Kunsthalle, 함부르크, 독일) 등에 소장되었다. 본 전시는 2016년 서울여대 박물관에서의 그룹전시 이후 국내에서 8년 만에 그의 작품을 선보이는 자리로, 빛을 활용한 오브제, 영상 프로젝터가 내장된 미니어처 등 쾨혀만의 대표작들이 다수 전시된다.

작가는 길게 뻗은 어두운 통로의 심연(Abgründe)과 그 안을 들여다보는 사람들의 심리를 물리적으로 실체화하고, 현실의 균열이 돋보이는 새로운 공간을 연출하는 방법을 연구해왔다. 그는 레퍼런스가 철저히 배제된 단순한 디자인의 상자에 작은 구멍을 뚫거나, 터널처럼 길게 뻗은 오브제 박스 안에서 영상을 통해 소리와 움직임을 연출하여 관객이 직접 작품에 숨은 사적인 이야기를 들여다보도록 유도한다. 영상과 미니어처 오브제가 결합한 이번 출품작들은 가상의 공간이나 그가 머물렀던 장소에서 벌어진 일상적인 상황을 작은 박스 안에서 재현했다. 쾨혀만의 작업에는 창밖의 거센 눈보라가 보이는 황량한 방, 아름다운 자연풍경을 배경으로 한 공간 등 내부와 외부, 유토피아와 디스토피아의 경계가 모호한 다양한 공간이 존재한다. 이렇게 창조된 공간은 숨은 이야기의 배경이 되어 관객의 상상력을 자극하며 다양한 내적 경험을 가능케 할 것이다.
