Kang Kwang
The Land

Gana Art presents an exhibition by Kang Kwang who paints on canvas as an individual style, containing the historical context from 1970’s. Going through confusing time, the Korea War, the Vietnam War, and May 18 Gwangju Democratic Movement, Kang has expressed the tragedy of Korea’s modern and contemporary history on canvas, between representation and abstraction, by selecting painting material as nature. Nature is a symbol expressing emotion in mind, which is not used simple material of painting in his works. He represents his emotion that he feels the confusing contemporary history on his painting by nature’s aura. Also, he reveals tension in painting through expressing primitive sense and cold in nature. The exhibition is traced concentratedly all Kang’s painting, which is showed our story of history from the 1970s to 2000s. Therefore, this exhibition will be a chance to show Kang’s artistic viewpoint generally.

아름다운 터에서

가나아트는 1970년대부터 오늘날까지, 동시대의 역사적 맥락을 담으며 독자적인 화풍을 구현해 온 강광의 초대전을 개최한다. 6. 25전쟁, 월남전 참전, 민주화 운동을 몸소 경험하며 혼란스러운 시기를 지나온 그는 한국 근현대사 속 비극을 리얼리즘과 모더니즘이라는 두 갈래길에서 자연이라는 소재를 통해 자신의 작업에 녹여냈다. 그에게 있어 자연은 단순히 재현할 수 있는 매재(媒材)가 아니라, 스스로의 감정을 드러내는 상징물이다. 실제 살아가고 있는 혼잡한 현대사 안에서 느끼는 본인의 감정을 자연이 지닌 고유의 분위기로 표현한 것으로, 강광은 자연에서 느껴지는 냉정함과 원초적 감각을 표현하여 화면에 긴장감을 부여한다. 이번 전시에서는 1970년대부터 2000년대까지 그가 풀어낸 역사 속 우리의 이야기들이 담긴 작품을 총망라하면서도 특히 향토성이 잘 드러나는 작업들을 집중적으로 조명한다. 본 전시는 강광의 예술세계를 총체적으로 감상할 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것이다.
