Accumulation

Gana Art presents Accumulation, a solo exhibition by Kim Bongtae (b. 1937), notably associated with the first generation of Korean abstract artists, from May 17 to June 16, 2024, at Gana Art Center, Pyeongchang-dong, Seoul. Through the combination of primary color expression and sculptural forms, Kim has until now produced striking works that come together in a singular artistic world. The exhibition, which marks 20 years since his solo exhibition at Gana Art in 2004, and the first retrospective at a commercial gallery since his 2016 retrospective at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea will feature more than 40 works from the mid-1970s to 2024. The exhibition will also include a new work, Flattened Box, which reaffirms the artist’s distinction in Korean art history as a leading figure within color-field painting.

Accumulation takes its title from one of Kim’s series of the same name. During the process of preparing for this exhibition, Kim remarked that “It’s all accumulation.” Defined as a gathering or a pile of something, the word accumulation seems to gain additional significance when considering the retrospective’s timeline of the artist’s life and work from the 1970s until today. Ultimately, life can be seen as a series of accumulation. “I must contain a lot of things, but I don’t know how much or in which ways, so I will continue searching for this for as long as I live,” Kim says, a statement evidenced by the many collected stories that run through his practice. His similarly-shaped boxes, spanning delivery parcels and anthropomorphic constructions, all express a love for life. In hosting Accumulation, Gana Art hopes that the experience of walking alongside Kim’s artistic journey, an accumulation of over 60 years of time, will become a meaningful moment that adds to each visitor’s life.

가나아트는 한국 추상미술 1세대인 김봉태(Kim BongTae, b.1937)의 개인전 《축적(Accumulation)》을 2024년 5월 17일부터 6월 16일까지 평창동 가나아트센터에서 개최한다. 김봉태는 원색의 색채 표현과 조형 형태가 두드러지는 작업을 통해 독창적인 작업 세계를 구축해왔다. 2004년 가나아트에서의 개인전 이후 20년 만에 열리는 전시이자, 2016년 국립현대미술관 회고전 이후 갤러리에서는 처음으로 개최하는 회고전인 본 전시는 김봉태의 1970년대 중반부터 2024년까지의 작업40여 점을 만나볼 수 있다. 이번 전시에서는 신작인 <납작한 상자(Flattened Box)>도 함께 공개되며, 색면회화(色面繪畫)로 한국 미술계에 독보적인 위치를 차지하고 있는 김봉태의 미술사적 위상을 다시 확인하는 뜻깊은 자리가 될 것이다.

전시의 제목인 《축적(Accumulation)》은 작가의 동명의 연작 제목에서 따온 것이다. 김봉태는 이번 회고전을 준비하며 “It’s all Accumulation”이라고 말한 바 있다. ‘모아서 쌓은 것’이라는 ‘축적’의 뜻이 1970년대부터 지금까지 쌓아온 작가의 시간과 작업을 조망하는 회고전의 성격과도 일맥상통하여 더욱 의미가 있다. 삶은 결국 축적의 연속이다. 김봉태는 “내 안에 무엇이 많이 있을 텐데, 얼만큼 어떻게 들어있는지 모르기 때문에 죽을 때까지 찾아보는 거다” 라고 말하며 작업을 관통하는 화제인 ‘삶’에 대한 이야기를 다양하게 변주한 연작들을 통해 축적해왔다. 그는 의인화된 상자, 배달된 상자 등 어슷비슷한 모양의 상자들을 가지고 삶에 대한 애정을 담아냈다. 가나아트는 《축적(Accumulation)》을 개최하며, 60여 년의 시간이 축적된 김봉태의 예술 여정을 함께 걷는 경험이 각자의 삶에 중요한 한 층을 쌓아 올리는 의미 있는 순간이 되기를 바란다.
