Perfect Picture

Gana Art presents a solo exhibition by Moon Hyeongtae (b. 1976) titled Perfect Picture from September 13 to October 9, 2024, at the Gana Art Center in Pyeongchang-dong, Seoul. Moon Hyeongtae explores the essence of life by incorporating warm emotions and fairytale-like humor into ordinary and everyday subjects. He focuses on the various “relationships” humans form throughout their lives, capturing on canvas in his unique style the outcomes of experiences and thoughts accumulated along the trajectory of life. This exhibition, held two years after his 2022 solo exhibition CHOCKABLOCK, will feature over 60 new works.

The title of the exhibition, Perfect Picture, is taken from Moon’s artwork of the same name—a title he frequently uses. A “perfect picture” here does not refer to a well-drawn painting. Moon connects the joys and sorrows of life to his work, stating, “Just as life is completed by the accumulation of days, I believe that moments of joy, loss, pain, and even ugliness are all necessary to complete a life. That’s why all these moments are always perfect pictures and must be interconnected.” Just as small and large pieces of life come together to form a larger framework, so too are various elements essential to a work of art, thereby leading to the “perfect picture.” With the exhibition Perfect Picture, Gana Art aims to shine a spotlight on Moon Hyeongtae’s new works and follow the artist’s journey in exploring the essence of humanity through the people and lives around him.

Perfect Picture

가나아트는 일상적이고 평범한 소재에 따뜻한 감정과 동화적 해학을 깃들여 삶의 본질을 탐구하는 문형태(Moon Hyeongtae, b.1976)의 개인전 《Perfect Picture》를 2024년 9월 13일부터 10월 9일까지 평창동 가나아트센터에서 개최한다. 문형태는 인간이 살아가면서 맺는 다양한 ‘관계’에 주목하고, 삶의 궤적을 따라 쌓여온 경험과 생각의 결과물을 독자적인 방식으로 화면에 구현했다. 2022년 《CHOCKABLOCK》 개인전 이후 2년 만에 열리는 본 전시에서는 문형태의 신작 60여점이 공개된다.

전시 제목인 《Perfect Picture》는 문형태의 동명 작품 제목으로 그가 즐겨 쓰는 제목에서 따온 것이다. ‘완벽한 그림’은 잘 그려진 그림이라는 의미가 아니다. 문형태는 삶의 희노애락을 작업과 연결시키며 “하루가 모여서 생이 완성되듯이 기쁜 순간, 상실의 순간, 고통이나 추악한 순간들도 생을 완성하기 위해 꼭 필요한 것들이라고 봅니다. 때문에 그 모든 순간들은 항상 완벽한 그림이고 또 연결되어 있어야 했습니다.”라고 말한 바 있다. 삶의 크고 작은 조각들이 모여 하나의 큰 틀을 이루는 것처럼, 마찬가지로 작품 속에서도 여러 요소들이 꼭 필요하기 때문에 ‘Perfect Picture(완벽한 그림)’이라고 명명했다. 가나아트는 《Perfect Picture》를 개최하며, 문형태의 신작을 집중 조명하고 주변 사람들과 삶의 모습을 통해 인간의 본질을 탐구하는 문형태의 여정을 따라가보고자 한다.
