NEVER ENDING NATURALISM

Gana Art LA is pleased to present Never Ending Naturalism, a solo exhibition by pioneering Korean artist Rim Dongsik (b. 1945). A seminal figure in Korean contemporary art, Rim emerged from the avant-garde movement of the 1970s, co-founding the experimental performance art group Yatoo, which was dedicated to site-specific engagements with nature. His time in Germany—where he intersected with the Fluxus movement and artists such as Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, and John Cage—further expanded his conceptual approach, integrating art and life.

In his latest body of work, Rim renders Korea’s shifting landscapes with poetic subtlety, capturing the ephemerality of the seasons and the quiet pulse of nature. Having transitioned from direct interventions in the environment to contemplative depictions of it, his paintings reflect a lifelong inquiry into the interplay between nature and culture. Each canvas unfolds as a meditation on time, place, and memory—an eternal cycle of transformation.

Through his work, Rim seeks harmony between the rushing currents of modern life and the quiet pulse of nature. 가나아트 엘에이는 2월 18일부터 4월 5일까지 임동식(b. 1945-)의 개인전 《Never Ending Naturalism》을 개최한다. 한국 자연미술의 선구자인 임동식은 1970년대 아방가르드 운동을 시작으로, 독일의 플럭서스 예술가들과 교류하며 삶과 예술의 경계를 허무는 개념적인 작업 방식을 지속해왔다. 특히 1981년, 그는 자연과의 깊은 소통을 바탕으로 인간의 내면을 성찰하는 독자적인 예술관을 전개한 미술 그룹 야투(Yatoo)를 창립하며 자신만의 예술 세계를 확립했다.

이번 전시에서 임동식은 변화하는 한국의 풍경을 시적이고 섬세하게 그려내며 자연의 고요한 정취를 포착한다. 그의 회화는 자연을 단순히 재현하는 것을 넘어, 시간, 장소, 기억에 대한 명상을 하듯이 사색적이고 관조적인 묘사로 전개된다. 종전까지의 작업에서 그는 야외 현장에서의 퍼포먼스를 회화로 재현했다면, 본 전시에 소개되는 신작에서는 계절의 순환 속에 깃든 자연의 끊임없는 흐름을 그려낸다. 이는 급변하는 현대 사회의 속도감과 부드러운 대조를 이루어 그만의 독특한 조형 언어를 보여준다.
