Selenophile

Gana Art LA is thrilled to announce the opening of Selenophile, a group exhibition bringing together five contemporary artists and master ceramicists: Kwon Dae-Sup, Kang Min Soo, Kim Jonghoon, Lee Inchin, and Shin Meekyoung. Selenophile is a unique exhibition featuring artists’ renditions of the iconic Moon Jars.

Reminiscent of the shape of a gibbous moon, moon jars, formerly known as the “Daeho,” embodies the aesthetics of elegance and simplicity that draw attention to their viewers as they connect to Korean history. The Korean Moon Jar represents core Neo-Confucian ideals of purity and integrity and has been a historical symbol of abundance, fortune, and friendliness. Originally made during the Joseon dynasty(1392 – 1910), the royal family popularized moon jars in their production as desired for their minimalist forms and milky white color. They were customarily used to hold flowers or wine but were also ceremonial and symbolic of Korean identity. They are considered national treasures and are held in museums around the world. 

Selenophile is a celebration of the historical significance of Moon Jars and the artists’ practice in continuing the making of their modern reinterpretations. Gana Art LA encourages its visitors to encounter them and be captivated, soothed, and admire their imperfect beauty in their presence.

Selenophile

가나아트는 현대 예술가 및 도예가 5인, 권대섭(b. 1952), 강민수(b. 1972), 김종훈(b. 1972), 이인진(b. 1957), 신미경(b. 1967)과 함께 달항아리를 예술적으로 조명하는 전시 《Selenophile》을 개최한다.

백자대호는 그 모양이 크고 동그란 보름달과 같아 달항아리라고 불린다. 한국의 우아함과 소박함의 미학을 선보이는 달항아리는 역사적으로 순수와 청렴이라는 성리학의 핵심 이론을 표현하며, 조선시대 왕실에서 보급되기도 했다. 유백색의 미니멀한 형태가 특징인 달항아리는 꽃이나 술을 담는 실용적인 방식뿐만 아니라 한국인의 정체성을 상징하는 의례적인 용도로도 사용되었다. 현재 달항아리는 국보로 지정되어 전 세계 박물관에 소장되어 있는 한국을 대표하는 유물이다.

《Selenophile》은 달항아리의 역사적 의의를 살피고 이를 현대적으로 재해석한 작품을 소개한다. 달항아리의 다양한 조형적 변용을 통해 불완전한 존재의 아름다움을 되돌아보는 시간이 되기를 바란다.
