Gana Art is pleased to present Yoo Sun Tai’s solo exhibition at Space 97 and the Craft Hall of Gana Art Center. This exhibition marks Yoo’s first solo show at Gana Art in five years, featuring 40 works, including paintings and objects. It will also introduce for the first time 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴: 𝘊𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺, a new series from his ongoing project.

Since his time studying in Paris in the 1980s, Yoo has experimented with both two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, consistently pushing the boundaries between mediums. After years of sculptural exploration, he initiated his 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴 series in 2006. This work juxtaposes contrasting or tension-filled concepts—such as East and West, nature and architecture, transience and eternity, past and present, and the two-dimensional and three-dimensional—within a single composition. By doing so, he dissolves the perceived gap between these elements, creating a cyclical and interconnected world. Yoo asserts that art itself does not truly exist but is merely a matter of revelation and expression—an outlook that is reflected in his rejection of conventional hierarchies and categorizations. The elements in his works coexist in a state of harmony in diversity (和而不同), acknowledging their differences while maintaining their independence and seeking unity.

This thematic approach is particularly evident in the relationship between nature and objects in his work. In Yoo’s art, nature is often presented as a landscape, embodying a harmony of various components and an inherent cyclical nature with no fixed beginning or end—qualities that resonate with the essence of his practice. Within these landscapes, Yoo introduces man-made objects as contrasting elements, illustrating their coexistence with nature. At times, he subverts this conventional dynamic by overlaying landscapes onto objects themselves. Examples include a cello painted with an image of a bright blue sky and lush forests or a globe that, instead of a world map, is covered in autumn foliage. The artist refers to this phenomenon as a simultaneous landscape, presenting the possibility of harmony and coexistence through the seemingly unfamiliar combinations of objects.

가나아트는 유선태(b. 1957-)의 개인전, 《자연을 담은 오브제, 오브제를 담은 자연》을 가나아트센터 ‘Space 97’과 ‘공예관’에서 개최한다. 이번 전시는 유선태가 가나아트에서 5년 만에 갖는 개인전으로, 회화와 오브제 작품 총 40여점을 선보이고 <말과 글>의 새로운 시리즈인 ‘우연과 필연’을 최초로 공개하는 자리가 될 것이다.

1980년대 파리 유학 시절부터 평면과 입체를 동시에 시도한 유선태는 매체의 경계를 허무는 조형 실험을 거듭한 끝에 2006년 <말과 글> 연작을 시작했다. 그는 이 작업에서 동양과 서양, 자연과 건축, 찰나와 영원, 과거와 현재, 평면과 입체와 같이 상반된, 혹은 긴장 관계에 있는 개념들을 하나의 화면에 배치함으로써 두 요소 간의 간극을 무색하게 하고 서로 순환하는 세계를 만들었다. 애초에 예술이란 것도 인간이 규정한 것일 뿐 존재하지 않으며, 단지 드러냄과 표현만이 있다는 그의 말처럼, 기성의 관념이나 위계, 범주를 거부하는 작가의 태도가 작업에서 엿보인다. 그의 작업 속 요소들은 서로 다름을 인정하고 독립적으로 존재하는 동시에, 조화를 추구하는 화이부동(和而不同)의 상태에 있다.

이 같은 주제 의식은 자연과 오브제의 관계에서 특히 잘 드러난다. 유선태의 예술에서 주로 풍경으로 제시되는 자연은 다양한 구성물들의 화합을 기반으로 하고, 시작과 끝이 없이 순환하는 본성을 가지고 있어 그 자체만으로도 작업의 의미를 잘 대변한다. 유선태는 풍경 안에 자연과 대비되는 장치로서 인간의 산물인 오브제를 그려 넣어 서로 조화를 이루는 모습을 보여주고, 때로는 이러한 보통의 설정을 뒤집어 오브제에 풍경을 덧그리기도 한다. 푸른 하늘과 숲이 울창한 풍경이 그려진 첼로, 세계지도 대신 단풍으로 물든 산이 그려진 지구본 등이 그것이다. 이번 전시의 제목처럼 그림이 조각이 되고, 조각이 그림이 되는 모양이다. 작가는 이를 두고 ‘동시적인 풍경’이라고 표현한다. 언뜻 생경해 보이는 대상들의 조합으로 화합과 조화의 가능성을 보여주는 것이다.
